Hashtag

A hashtag is a word or phrase preceded by a # symbol on Instagram. It categorises content, makes posts discoverable in hashtag feeds and contributes to organic reach. Instagram allows up to 30 hashtags per post.

What is a hashtag on Instagram?

A hashtag is the # symbol followed directly by a word or phrase without spaces, for example #instagram or #commenttodm. When used in an Instagram caption or in the first comment, it categorises the post under that hashtag's feed. Users who follow or search a hashtag can discover posts they tagged with it — including posts from accounts they do not follow.

Types of hashtags

Effective hashtag strategies usually combine several categories:

  • Niche hashtags: small, specific communities (10,000–500,000 posts). Your post stays visible longer because fewer posts compete for attention. Best for building a targeted audience.
  • Industry hashtags: medium-sized, relevant to your sector (500,000–5 million posts). Good for reaching people interested in your topic area.
  • Branded hashtags: your own brand or campaign name. Used to collect community content and build searchability for your brand.
  • Trending hashtags: currently high-traffic (often tens of millions of posts). Brief boost in exposure, but competition is very high and relevance is low unless you are participating in a genuine trend.

Purely generic hashtags like #love or #instagood (billions of posts) offer essentially no meaningful reach benefit — your post disappears immediately. Focus on relevance over size.

Instagram's hashtag rules

  • Maximum per post: 30 hashtags in caption + comments combined
  • Placement: in the caption or in the first comment — both have similar algorithmic effects. Hiding them in the first comment keeps the caption visually cleaner.
  • Format: no spaces within a hashtag; numbers are allowed (#10tips); special characters other than underscore are not supported
  • Banned hashtags: some hashtags are restricted or shadow-banned by Instagram. Avoid generic terms that have been misused historically.

Hashtags and Comment-to-DM: indirect relationship

Hashtags are a discovery tool — they help new audiences find your post. Comment-to-DM converts that discovered audience into direct contacts. The relationship between the two is indirect but important: the better your hashtag strategy, the more people see your post, and the more people see the keyword call-to-action in your caption, the more comments the flow receives.

For Reels, the algorithm-driven reach often makes hashtags secondary — but they still contribute to discoverability in hashtag feeds and the Explore tab.

Best practices

  • Use 5–15 relevant hashtags rather than the maximum 30 generic ones
  • Research hashtag size before using it — aim for niche and industry tags with genuine community activity
  • Do not use the same hashtag set on every post — Instagram may reduce reach if it detects repetitive patterns
  • Include at least one branded hashtag on every post to build a searchable archive
  • For Comment-to-DM posts, prioritise the keyword call-to-action in the caption over hashtag count — the comment mechanic does not depend on hashtags at all

Hashtags and SendSeven

Hashtags are not part of the SendSeven flow setup. They operate at the Instagram content level. The Comment-to-DM trigger in SendSeven responds to comments containing your defined keyword — the hashtags in the caption only affect how many people see the post in the first place. More people finding the post through good hashtags means more potential comment triggers. The flow itself handles the rest.
