Lead Magnet
A lead magnet is a free piece of content or benefit offered to a prospect in exchange for their contact information or consent. On Instagram, Comment-to-DM is the most direct delivery mechanism for lead magnets — the person comments a keyword and receives the lead magnet link immediately via direct message.
What is a lead magnet?
A lead magnet is anything a business offers for free in exchange for a contact signal — an email address, a name, or (on Instagram) simply the act of commenting a keyword and engaging in a conversation. The goal is to convert anonymous visitors or followers into identifiable contacts who can be reached again.
The name comes from the idea that the free offer "attracts" (like a magnet) people who are genuinely interested in the topic, filtering out casual browsers from serious prospects.
Types of lead magnets
Lead magnets come in many formats. The right one depends on your audience and your product:
- Informational lead magnets: checklists, guides, templates, cheat sheets, mini-courses, webinar replays. Work well for coaches, consultants, educators and B2B businesses.
- Discount and offer lead magnets: a discount code, a free trial, an exclusive early-access offer. Work well for e-commerce, SaaS and subscription services.
- Experience lead magnets: a free consultation, a strategy call, a demo, a trial class. Work well for service businesses, gyms, beauty studios and high-ticket offers.
- Access lead magnets: exclusive content, a community invite, early access to a product. Work well for creators, course businesses and product launches.
Lead magnet delivery on Instagram via Comment-to-DM
Comment-to-DM is the most natural delivery mechanism for lead magnets on Instagram. The flow: you announce the lead magnet in a post or reel ("Comment GUIDE and I'll send you the free checklist"), the person comments the keyword, and the private reply delivers the lead magnet via direct message.
Important technical note: on Instagram, lead magnets always arrive as a download link, not a file attachment. Instagram DMs do not support document attachments. The file (PDF, template, checklist) lives on an external host — Google Drive, Dropbox, your own domain — and the DM contains the link to it. For the recipient the experience is identical: one tap and the download starts.
Lead magnets and consent
Delivering a directly requested lead magnet (the person triggered it themselves by commenting) is generally unproblematic from a data protection perspective. What comes after — using that contact for further marketing — requires a separate legal basis under applicable data protection law. The cleanest approach: ask for explicit consent in the second DM, after delivering the lead magnet. "Can I let you know about future guides and offers?" with a yes/no quick-reply button is specific enough.
Lead magnets with SendSeven
In SendSeven's visual Flow Builder you connect the trigger Instagram comment received, a condition on the keyword, a first DM inviting a reply, a second DM with the lead magnet link, and optionally a consent question and a tag. All conversations land in the unified inbox. Contacts who consent can be reached again via direct message campaigns at the next launch or drop.
