What is agentic AI?

Agentic AI describes AI systems that work towards a goal independently. Instead of just answering a single question, an AI agent breaks a task into steps, uses tools such as a knowledge base or an interface to do so, and makes decisions along the way. The foundation is a Large Language Model extended with planning, memory, and tool access.

The term is widely seen as the AI trend of 2026. While a classic assistant stays reactive (question in, answer out), an agent acts purposefully and across multiple steps.

Agentic AI versus the classic chatbot

A simple AI chatbot answers a message and then waits for the next one. Agentic AI goes further:

  • Multiple steps. The agent plans what needs to be done and carries out the steps one after another.
  • Tools. It taps into data and systems, for example to check for a free appointment or look up an order.
  • Goal instead of answer. Success isn't “gave an answer,” it's “completed the task.”

An SMB example

A customer messages a car garage on WhatsApp: “I need an appointment for a tyre change next week.” An agentic workflow recognises the intent, checks the calendar for free slots, suggests two appointments, confirms after the customer's choice, and creates the entry, all without a team member having to step in.
