LLM (Large Language Model)
An LLM (Large Language Model) is the AI technology behind modern assistants like ChatGPT or Claude. It was trained on enormous amounts of text, which is how it can understand language, answer questions, and write text. In customer service, an LLM forms the basis for chatbots and AI assistants.
What is an LLM (Large Language Model)?
An LLM is a “large language model”, an AI system trained on enormous amounts of text that has learned from it how language works. It recognises connections, answers questions, summarises text, and writes its own replies in natural language. Well-known examples are the models behind ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini.
Put simply, an LLM predicts the most likely next word for every answer, word by word, until a complete sentence emerges. That is exactly why the answers sound fluent and human. An LLM is the technical foundation for modern AI chatbots and AI agents.
What an LLM can and cannot do
For practical use, it helps to know where the strengths lie and where the limits are:
- What it does well: understanding language, writing politely and on brand, translating between languages, summarising long texts, grasping the intent behind a message (see NLU).
- Where the limits are: An LLM only knows what existed up to its training cut-off. It doesn't know your current prices, stock levels, or opening hours. And it can produce a plausible-sounding but wrong answer, a so-called AI hallucination.
Both weaknesses can be mitigated. With RAG, the model taps into your own knowledge base and stays up to date. You steer how reliably the answers are phrased through prompt engineering.
An SMB example
A small accounting firm in London serves many clients and constantly gets standard questions: “When is the deadline for the self-assessment tax return?”, “What documents do I need for the first consultation?”
An LLM on its own would answer these from general knowledge, with the risk of naming an outdated deadline. So the firm stores the current deadlines and the checklist in its knowledge base. The LLM still phrases the answer in a friendly, easy-to-understand way, but draws on the verified content. When it comes to a specific tax assessment, the system hands off to an accountant. That way the firm uses the model's linguistic strength without giving up professional responsibility.
LLM-powered assistance with SendSeven
SendSeven is a unified messaging platform that combines WhatsApp, Telegram, SMS, Instagram, Messenger, email, live chat, and browser push in one inbox. The built-in AI assistant uses a powerful language model but combines it with your own knowledge base (RAG), so the answers stay current and tailored to your business.
A confidence score rates every answer. When in doubt, the hybrid human-AI handoff kicks in: the conversation goes to a team member instead of the AI guessing. All data is processed in line with GDPR, hosted in the EU, Made in Germany. You can try SendSeven free for 14 days.
