WhatsApp Business Web
WhatsApp Business Web is the browser variant of the WhatsApp Business App (web.whatsapp.com). It is not standalone software but a Companion Device linked to the smartphone via QR code. Functionally identical to the Desktop apps for Windows and Mac.
What is WhatsApp Business Web?
WhatsApp Business Web is the browser version of the WhatsApp Business App, available at web.whatsapp.com. It was created so that owners and employees could use WhatsApp at the desk without constantly reaching for their phone. Technically it is a Companion Device: not standalone software with its own login, but a mirror of the smartphone account.
The WhatsApp Desktop app for Windows (Microsoft Store) and macOS (App Store) works identically. Three forms, one logic: all three are anchored to the main device (smartphone), all three count towards the device limit, and all three lose their connection if the main device stays offline for 14 days.
Limits and the device rule
Each WhatsApp account allows a maximum of four Companion Devices at once. Browsers, Desktop apps, and tablets count combined, not by category. Anyone using a Mac at the office, a tablet at home, and WhatsApp Web in a personal browser has already taken three slots. At most one slot is left for the team. Sharing login credentials between staff breaches Meta's terms of service.
When WhatsApp Business Web is enough
- Solo operators using WhatsApp on the desktop and on the phone in parallel
- Clear role split with no overlap — one person reads, one person writes
- Low volume (under 20 requests per day)
- No marketing newsletter, no CRM need, no statistics required
When WhatsApp Business Web no longer fits
- Once more than two team members need to handle requests in parallel
- When customers receive duplicate replies or requests fall through the cracks
- When visibility is needed — who last spoke to whom about what
- When a Data Processing Agreement (DPA) is required for GDPR compliance — none is available for the Business App
- For marketing newsletters above 256 recipients
The professional fix: Coexistence instead of Web/Desktop alone
Anyone outgrowing WhatsApp Web/Desktop does not have to switch fully. WhatsApp Coexistence has allowed the Business App and a professional team inbox to run on the same phone number in parallel since November 2025. Web and Desktop keep running, the owner keeps typing from the app, and on top the team gets a shared inbox with assignment, handover, templates, AI replies and statistics.
With SendSeven this starts at €9 per channel and month. Setup in 10 to 15 minutes via Embedded Signup, reversible from the app settings. More in our guide on WhatsApp Web and Desktop and in the Coexistence Guide.
