Conversational Commerce
Conversational commerce means selling, advising and supporting customers directly in a chat, on WhatsApp, Instagram or live chat, instead of through a classic web-shop funnel. The customer asks a question, gets an answer and buys in the same conversation, without switching channels.
What is conversational commerce?
Conversational commerce (sometimes called chat commerce) is selling through messaging channels. Instead of steering the customer through a product page, a basket and a payment form, the whole process happens in one dialogue: question, advice, recommendation, order, payment.
The difference from classic e-commerce is who leads. In a web shop the customer searches alone and decides alone. In a chat someone guides them, a member of your team or an AI agent, just like in a physical store. Most online shops lack exactly this personal advice, and that is where the lever lies.
The channels themselves drive the trend. Messaging apps are the apps people keep open all day, so a business that sells there meets customers where they already are.
Why conversational commerce matters for small businesses
Three reasons make the approach attractive for small and mid-sized businesses in particular:
- Higher conversion. A question cleared up in 30 seconds in a chat would have ended in an abandoned basket in a web shop. Advice beats a form.
- A lower hurdle. No account, no long checkout, no password. The customer simply writes.
- An ongoing relationship. The contact stays in place after the purchase, which makes the next sale far cheaper to win.
Conversational commerce depends on two-way messaging: the customer can reply, ask again or change their mind at any time. Paid entry points come from Click-to-WhatsApp ads, which open a conversation directly instead of a landing page.
Example: an optician
An optician in Dublin runs an Instagram ad for a new sunglasses collection. People who click do not land on a product page but in a WhatsApp chat. A member of the team asks about face shape and budget, sends three photos of suitable frames, answers a question about prescription lenses and reserves the favourite pair for a fitting.
An anonymous click becomes a conversation, the conversation becomes an appointment, and the appointment becomes a €240 sale. The contact joins the shop’s owned audience and, with consent, receives an offer for matching prescription glasses in the autumn. A textbook case of cross-selling in the chat.
