Customer Lifetime Value (CLV)
Customer lifetime value (CLV) is the total value a customer generates over the entire business relationship. It shows what a customer is worth in the long run and why it pays to keep existing customers through messaging instead of constantly buying new ones.
What is customer lifetime value?
Customer lifetime value, CLV for short (sometimes CLTV), puts a figure on the total revenue or contribution margin a customer generates over the course of the relationship. What counts is not a single purchase but the sum of all purchases over the years.
A simple rule of thumb: average order value times purchases per year times average customer lifetime in years. A customer who buys three times a year for €50 and stays for five years has a CLV of €750.
CLV is the counterpart to customer acquisition cost (CAC). The two only make sense together. A customer who costs €100 to win and brings in €750 is good business. If winning them costs €800, it is a loss.
Why messaging retention raises CLV
CLV grows through three levers, and messaging works on all three:
- Longer relationships. Customers who hear from you regularly and relevantly stay longer.
- Higher purchase frequency. Reminders, offers and reorder prompts bring customers back more often.
- Bigger baskets. Targeted upselling and cross-selling raise the value of each order.
The direct relationship is what matters. Through an owned audience you reach your customers without an algorithm or ad spend in between. That is why retention is so much cheaper than winning new customers, and why it lifts CLV for the long term. Our article on fixing the CAC and CLTV maths with WhatsApp retention goes deeper.
Example: a coffee roaster
A coffee roaster in Galway sells online. A new customer costs around €18 to acquire and orders once for €24, which barely looks profitable at first glance. Messaging retention changes the picture.
With the customer’s consent, the roaster sends a WhatsApp message every four weeks: “Running low on your favourite coffee? Reorder with one tap.” The customer now orders ten times a year, stays for three years and, through cross-selling, tries the chocolate too. A first order worth €24 becomes a CLV of more than €700. The same €18 spent on acquisition suddenly pays back many times over.
