24-Hour Messaging Window

The 24-hour messaging window is WhatsApp's rule that allows businesses to reply freely only within 24 hours of the customer's last message. After this window expires, only pre-approved Message Templates may be sent – a spam protection mechanism for users.

What is the 24-Hour Messaging Window?

The 24-hour messaging window (also called the "Customer Care Window" or "Session Window") is a core rule of the WhatsApp Business API: businesses may only contact customers freely within 24 hours of the customer's last message. After this period, only pre-approved Message Templates are permitted.

The rule starts from the moment a customer sends a message. If a customer writes on Monday at 3:00 PM, you have until Tuesday at 3:00 PM to send session messages (free-form replies). Every new customer message restarts the timer – it does not continuously count down but is reactivated by customer activity.

Once the 24 hours expire, WhatsApp switches to template mode: you can only send pre-approved templates that have passed Meta's review process. During the active window, these replies are called session messages. These templates are paid and must meet specific quality standards.

Why Does the 24-Hour Window Exist?

The rule protects WhatsApp users from spam and unwanted marketing messages. WhatsApp is designed to remain a communication channel for friends and family – not become an advertising platform.

For businesses, this means:

  • Anti-spam mechanism – No unsolicited mass broadcasts
  • Customer-initiated contact – Conversations start with the customer
  • Quality assurance – Templates go through a review process
  • Cost control – Proactive messages (templates) have a per-message cost
  • User protection – Opt-out is available at any time

The rule encourages relevant, timely communication instead of constant interruptions. Businesses that respond quickly and resolve issues within the first session benefit the most.

Practical Example

A customer writes on Monday at 10:00 AM: "Where is my order?" You respond within minutes with the tracking link – a session message, free of charge. At 4:00 PM Monday you proactively send: "Update: your package shipped today!" – still within the 24 hours, still free.

On Tuesday at 11:00 AM (25 hours later) you want to follow up: "Did your package arrive?" This is no longer possible as a session message – you would need a template such as: "Hi {{1}}, your package should have arrived yesterday. Is everything okay?" This template must be pre-approved by Meta and incurs a per-message fee.

If the customer writes on Tuesday at 12:00 PM: "Yes, it arrived, thanks!" – a new 24-hour window opens, and you can reply freely again until Wednesday at 12:00 PM.
