A2P Messaging

A2P messaging stands for application-to-person: messages that a system sends automatically to a person. They include one-time passwords, shipping and appointment notifications and marketing messages. P2P (person-to-person), by contrast, is the ordinary exchange between two people.

What is A2P messaging?

A2P stands for application-to-person. It covers messages that nobody types by hand: software triggers them automatically and delivers them to a person. They go out over channels such as SMS, WhatsApp or email, usually through an API or a CPaaS platform.

Typical examples:

  • Authentication: one-time passwords (OTP) and verification codes.
  • Notifications: shipping updates, appointment reminders, booking confirmations.
  • Marketing: offers and promotions, provided the recipient has given an opt-in.

The key distinction is from P2P (person-to-person). P2P is an ordinary chat between two people. A2P is system-driven, automated and often sent in large volumes. On WhatsApp, business-initiated A2P messages go out as approved message templates, and sending is subject to Meta’s messaging limits.

Why A2P messaging matters

A2P is the invisible engine behind many everyday routines. Without it there would be no login code for online banking and no “your parcel has arrived” message:

  • Reach: a direct line to the customer’s phone, where messages tend to be noticed quickly.
  • Automation: messages trigger themselves, without anyone on your team lifting a finger.
  • Reliability: time-critical information such as codes or status updates arrives straight away.

The legal side matters as much as the technology. Marketing messages need consent. In the UK, PECR requires prior consent for marketing texts and emails to individuals, with a narrow “soft opt-in” for existing customers. In the US, the TCPA generally requires prior express written consent for automated marketing texts, and carriers expect businesses that send A2P SMS from standard ten-digit numbers to register their brand and use case under 10DLC. Transactional and security messages such as OTPs are a separate category, because they belong to a service the customer asked for. Mixing the two invites complaints and, on WhatsApp, a falling quality rating.

Example: a dental practice

A dental practice in Leeds sends automated appointment reminders, a classic A2P case. The day before the appointment, the practice software triggers a WhatsApp message based on an approved template.

The patient does nothing except read the reminder and confirm with one tap. If they reply, the exchange becomes a normal P2P chat with the practice team. Fewer appointments are missed because nobody simply forgets, and the front desk no longer phones round to remind every patient.

A2P messaging with SendSeven

SendSeven sends A2P messages through one API on every relevant channel, from WhatsApp and SMS to email. You trigger notifications, codes and, with a valid opt-in, marketing messages automatically.

For WhatsApp, we use the official WhatsApp Cloud API as a Meta Business Partner, with approved templates. Customer replies land in the unified inbox and turn into a real conversation. Incoming messages are always free. For outbound WhatsApp messages, Meta charges per message by category and market, with no Meta fee on the first 1,000 service messages per number and month, and SendSeven charges its own fee per message.
