Green Tick (WhatsApp Official Business Account)

The green tick on WhatsApp marks an officially verified business account, known as an Official Business Account. Meta grants it mainly to notable, widely recognised brands. Since 2024 WhatsApp shows the badge as a blue tick, in line with Facebook and Instagram, but many businesses still call it the green tick.

What is the green tick on WhatsApp?

The green tick is the badge of an Official Business Account on the WhatsApp Business Platform. It appears next to the business name in the chat and in the contact details and signals that Meta has confirmed the account as a known, authentic business.

One thing has changed: in 2024 WhatsApp switched the colour of the badge from green to blue, so verification looks the same across WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram. The status behind it is the same Official Business Account. Many guides and businesses still talk about the green tick, which is why this glossary keeps the name.

The badge is not granted automatically or on request. Meta looks mainly at notability: how often the business appears in news coverage and other reputable sources, and how established the brand is. A well-maintained profile in your WhatsApp Business Account and a completed Meta business verification are the foundation, but they do not guarantee the badge. Do not confuse it with Meta Verified, Meta’s paid verification subscription, which follows its own rules.

Why the badge matters

Trust is everything in a chat, and the badge pays directly into it:

  • Credibility: customers see at once that they are talking to the real business and not to an impostor.
  • Verified name: the confirmed business name sits next to the badge, which makes the sender easy to recognise.
  • Protection against impersonation: the badge makes fraud under someone else’s name harder.

The badge is not required to send through the WhatsApp Business API. Messaging, templates and limits work without it. Business verification, on the other hand, is a practical step: it is one of the routes from the starting messaging limit of 250 to 2,000. The badge itself is a trust bonus that matters most in marketing and in sensitive communication.

Practical example

A regional insurance broker in Bristol handles claims notifications and appointment confirmations over WhatsApp. At first, clients are unsure whether the messages really come from the broker or are a scam.

After completing business verification and building a clear presence in the press and online, the broker is granted Official Business Account status. The chat now shows the verified business name with the badge. The Is this really you? questions disappear, and clients reply to appointment requests much faster.
