WhatsApp Business Account (WABA)

A WhatsApp Business Account (WABA) is the central Meta account in which a business groups its phone numbers, message templates and settings for the WhatsApp Business API. It is the organisational frame behind every professional WhatsApp setup and should not be confused with the free WhatsApp Business App.

What is a WhatsApp Business Account (WABA)?

The WhatsApp Business Account, or WABA for short, is the management account within the Meta Business Platform that the WhatsApp Business API runs on. It brings together everything you need for professional messaging:

It is important to tell it apart from the WhatsApp Business App. The app is a free smartphone application for very small businesses. A WABA, by contrast, is an API account that allows automated, scalable messaging and access for several team members. A WABA always belongs to a business portfolio in Meta’s business tools.

Why the WABA matters

The WABA is the prerequisite for any serious WhatsApp communication beyond the app. Without it, you cannot submit templates or send broadcasts.

It is also where your numbers and templates are organised. Since 7 October 2025, messaging limits apply across the whole business portfolio, and the WABA places each of its numbers in that portfolio. For businesses with several locations or brands this is practical: one WABA can hold several numbers, without a separate account for each.

You do not usually set up API access to your WABA directly with Meta. You connect it through a provider such as SendSeven that links the official WhatsApp Cloud API, typically through Meta’s Embedded Signup.

What is changing with the WABA in 2026?

Meta is splitting the WABA in two. The phone number, business profile and quality rating move to the WhatsApp account, which belongs to you and can be shared with several providers. Templates, payment method and webhooks sit in a Messaging Account, and each provider gets its own. The existing WABA ID then refers to the Messaging Account.

Meta converts existing accounts automatically during the second half of 2026; you do not need to do anything. The main novelty is that you can use the same number with several providers at the same time. What this means for switching providers is explained in our article WhatsApp Business Account 2026: One Number, Several Providers.

Practical example

A bakery chain with eight shops across the West Midlands wants to send order updates and offers over WhatsApp. Instead of maintaining eight separate accounts, it creates one WABA and adds a phone number for each shop.

All shop numbers share the approved templates and the portfolio’s common messaging limit. Head office keeps an eye on quality and limits in one place, while each shop messages its customers from its own number. That saves admin and keeps the brand voice consistent.
